Gates Closed Until June 1

Every year the town closes and locks the gates on the Class 4 road that passes through the town forest until June 1.

Why? Mud season. Every spring, the roads become muddy so that vehicles of any kind dig into the road creating ruts. Water flowing in the ruts causes erosion that washes away gravel so the road is further damaged. The gravel washes into the woods and wetlands, harming wildlife habitat.

The gates also keep people from driving up to the summit meadows which are wet and much more easily damaged by vehicles, especially when they drive off road. Erosion of the beautiful meadows has been a serious problem.

Help protect the town forest we love. Don’t drive on the roads while the gates are closed and discourage others from trying to drive around the gates. Anyone attempting to cut the locks is breaking the law and, if caught, will be charged.

In the meantime, until June 1, enjoy a good hike on one of our many trails or walk the road to the summit.
